TOPIC 5: MEMORY, LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

Content

  • Memory and Learning
  • The storage(Retain information)
  • How forgetting could occur
  • Memories strategies(How to improve your memory)
  • Strategies for improving concentration
  • Reading/Study system (SQ3R)

MEMORY AND LEARNING

LEARNING PYRAMID:-

Student need to understand how information is learned and understand uses of various kind of active learning strategies in learning, retaining and using the information (encoding, storage, and retrieval) and indicates how ONE learn, remember and forget.

What is memory?

  • Memory is the retention of information like brain store place where we remember something

What is brain?

  • Brain is an organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates.

Part of computer component and part of human

Encoding/Input:-

  • Computer:-
  • Keybord, camera
  • Human:-
  • Five senses: ears, mouth, skin, nose, eyes

Storage:-

  • Computer:-
  • Hard disk, thumb drive
  • Human:-
  • 3 types of memory: sensory memory(SM), Short-Term-Memory(STM), Long-Term-Memory(LTM)

Retrieval/Output:-

  • Computer:-
  • Computer screen, printer, speaker
  • Human:-
  • Writing, walking, talking

 STORAGE

Sensory Memory (SM)

  1. Numerous incoming information from 5 senses will be stored in the sensory memory for an instant
  2. If one “pay attention” to stimuli, it will go to the short-term-memory (STM)
  3. If one does not pay attention, then the information will be lost
  4. Therefore, it is very important to pay attention while lecture, reading and when doing something

Short-Term-Memory(STM)

  1. Have very limited storage.
  2. From SM information will be take over by STM
  3. While in the STM, information must be repeated or use some learning strategies in order to get information to LTM, others will be forgotten
  4. Therefore students must realize that applying memory strategies is important to strengthen the memory ability

Long-Term-Memory(LTM)

  1. This memory has unlimited and largest storage
  2. Information from STM will moved to LTM and stored there for later use(retrieval)

HOW FORGETTING COULD OCCUR

  1. Did not pay attention to the information
  2. Last minute study
  3. Interference( two exams in a day)
  4. Did not understand the information
  5. Did not have good strategies
  6. Negative thinking

MEMORY STRATEGIES

Memory strategies will help students to encoding, storing, and retrieving in order to make the students remember and recall information easier

Image result for memory strategies

Memory strategies (How to improve your memory):-

  1. Massed practice versus Space practice:

2. Have a break time after reading for some period, e.g. 2 chapters a day and not all chapters a day before exam.

3. Rehearsal/Repeat the information again and again, e.g. repeat a large amount of number 10 times

4. Elaboration strategies:

  1. Associations
  • Connect each word with a person, place, things, feelings or situations.

2. Acronyms

  • e.g. UiTM- Universiti Teknologi MARA
  • e.g. PTAR- Perpustakaan Tunku Abdul Razak

3. Acrostics

  • e.g. Carnivores- animal eaters
  • e.g. Herbivores- plant eaters

5. Imaginary – Visualize the image of information needed

6. Organizational strategies – Organize the materials for example computer are divide into three part which are input, output, storage.

7. Comprehension monitoring strategies – Must comprehend the materials being read. SQ3R will be the best strategies

STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

Concentration:-

Focusing your attention on what you are doing.

Causes of poor concentration:

  1. Lack of attention
  2. Uncomfortable situation
  3. Distraction by others
  4. Lack of motivation
  5. Lack of interest
  6. Illness
  7. Anxieties

Strategies to improve concentration:

  1. Use motivational and organizational strategies
  2. Create a positive learning environment
  3. Deal with internal distractions
  4. Use active learning strategies
  5. Use your learning style in the task given
  6. Control your concentration

READING/STUDY SYSTEM (SQ3R)

  1. Create awareness by using a study system can help in comprehending reading academic materials due to three factors:
  2. Active learning strategies
  3. Use of multisensory methods(refer to learning pyramid)
  4. Immerse steps for self-testing and review

SQ3R

SQ3R is a comprehension strategy that facilities students think about the text they are reading while they are reading.

Survey: Student review the text to gain initial meaning from the title, subtitile, chapter introduction or led-in, boldfaced headings, graphs, charts, pictures the final paragraph or summary and end-of-chapter material

Question: Student try to form questions based on the survey

Read: As students read, they need to look for an answer that related to the question that they formed during preview text. This question based on the structure of the text, help focus student’s reading.

Recite: After each section, pause. Students will attempt to answer questions formed earlier. If student couldn’t answer, they look back and find the answer in the section. Students should recite and rehearse the answer to their questions. Summarize the information.

Review: After you have finished reading the whole reading assignment, refer back to each heading. Recall your questions and try to answer them. If you cannot recall, go back and find the answer.

Every person in this world has their own learning style. Learning style helps person in lot of things such as in remember something that important. For students, they really need to know what are their type of learning style. If they had noticed what type are their learning style, this will be more easier for them in their studies.

Lerning Style Invetory:

There are three domain type of learning style which is visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

TEACHING AND LEARNING CENTER

Before this we had sit on a test to identify what type of our learning style in a piece of paper.

I am one of the visual learners. So, I need to learn by seeing information that’s given by the lecture and I need to make more mind maps in order to remember the informations.

VISUAL LEARNERS

  1. Visual learners need to see information
  2. Have strong visualization skills and can remember objects, shapes, and pictures
  3. Learn by reading and bay watching films, videos and demonstrations
  4. Can see pictures in your mind

AUDITORY LEARNERS

  1. Auditory learners need to hear information
  2. Have a “good ear” or good listener and can hear difference in tones and rhythm
  3. Learn by reading out loud
  4. Can remember what you hear in a lecture

KINESTHETIC LEARNERS

  1. Kinesthetic learners need to physically active and doing things
  2. Hands-on-learner
  3. Have good coordination and learn by doing
  4. Generally have an active approach to learning

10 Steps to Colleges Success

1.Attend all classes

Attend to all classes are the main thing that we must do in order to success in the college. Attend to all classes are important because the attendant will give us credits and the credits will help us to achieve the best cgpa.

2.Become and active learner

Not all of students love to read books or notes in couple of times. So, we must take note in every things that lecture said and read it again and again in order to have a long-term memory.

3.Participate in class

Be the activeness student in the class by asking question in all subject that you learn in the class. Be the student that want to know something clearly.

4.Get to know your lectures

We need to know all lectures that teach us and what the subject that they will teach us. Knowing what they like and unlike in class also important for the student.

5.Form study groups with friends

Form a study group can help students to solve a difficult question. Form a study group also help student to remember something that they learn easily.

6.Stay up to date with your work

Make some note about our work to do and put it at place that we always see it. This will help student to avoid procrastination.

7.Be receptive to change

If we feel that we cannot reach the main gold of the work, we must learn and start to change the study strategies in order to reach the main gold of the work.

8.Work hard

It is hard to find gold. So, as a student we need to work harder and harder to archive our goal which is the best result at the end of the semester.

9.Prayer

As a muslim we must pray to Allah S.W.T in all things that we want to do. Every times before the class, pray to Him for bless us in the class.

10.Exercise and maintain health

according to scientist survey, exercise such as running and so on can benefit the brain. This can be one of the ways to relax the mind after all day long learning.
